Family Literacy Workshops on Early Literacy- for parents of children birth to age 5
Cooking with your Child can Support Literacy Skills
Cooking with children can support the art of reading directions, sequential skills in following the directions step by step, math skills through measurement, eye/hand coordination, and fine motor skills with measuring/stirring. Cooking as a family can build family connections and support social skill building with your children in a digital age. When cooking as a family, this can be a great way to connect children to the food they eat and the local sources of fresh vegetables, meat, and eggs. Helping children become aware of the Farm to Table concept and how that impacts the quality of the food they eat and how it supports local farms can be a great segway into helping them be more environmentally conscious.
Why not make this a family activity once a week and make a meal together?

Promoting Family Involvement and Literacy in the Home
A series of workshops for parents will be developed to support early literacy skills from birth from the encouragement of reading to their children, supporting older children in reading to their younger siblings, and specifically taking one topic or literacy skill a month that has supportive research based information then have parents create their own games and resources using simple materials such as index cards and file folders that support emergent literacy skills that they can take home each month. Each monthly meeting will be approximately one to one and a half hours long. The goal of this parent program will be to foster parent involvement in literacy with their children through rhyming, phonemic awareness, and recognition of print while empowering parents to see their value as their child’s first teacher. The group will be initially facilitated by a trained educator knowledgable about emergent literacy skills for the first two months then parents attending the group will take turns facilitating the group thereafter. The educator will act in a supportive role and utilize their knowledge and resources to help foster an atmostphere that empowers parents in their role as their child’s first teacher. Parents will have the opportunity to create literacy games and other materials to use with their child for the coming month, and feedback will be solicited from the group to determine how often literacy interactions occur each week as well as how easy and useful parents are finding using the materials. Pre and post surveys will be conducted on how often parents interact with their children in developing emergent reading skills.
