Understanding Story and Text Structure: Helping students understand the purpose of reading
Jan Ellis-Clements This session looks at the reasons for a comprehension deficit and shows effective strategies in working with students with learning disabilities on understanding story and text structure to help them understand the purpose for reading. Assessments and Learning Disabilities: Current Practices and their use in diagnosing student strengths and weaknesses
This workshop provides information and exposure to various assessment tools in the educational/psychological fields that help to assess learning disabilities and includes information on current research, and best practices. Attendees will be provided opportunities to practice giving educational assessments to other participants. Note: psychological assessments will be discussed and how results can be interpreted but cannot be given without a psychological advanced degree. Learners will use case studies with assessment information to write a prescriptive plan on how to work with a student and remediate key areas in their learning profile. |
Looking at a Holistic Approach to Treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

The use of alternative or holistic medicine in treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder will be explored through medical studies and a case study. Workshop on the Teacher as Practioner: Using Reflective Practice to help guide and modify instruction
Workshop provides an overview of reflective practice For more detailed work on reflective practice-see courses. The teacher as practitioner is a role open to a variety of perspectives for analysis and improvement that can offer learners opportunities for growth; one perspective is the discipline of reflective practice. In this workshop learners will analyze and integrate reflective thinking processes, descriptive feedback, and reflective strategies and benefits. The learner will also synthesize experiential learning cycles and perspectives and personal action themes into a plan for ongoing success as a reflective practitioner. Evaluation of present teaching practices will provide a portfolio to improve personal and professional growth, teaching methods and strategies, and student learning. |
